My Legacy

In youth no thoughts

Only fun is sought

Making a mark is for the old

A lifetime spent and a story told

My first 50 years is etched in stone

During the first through twenty years is my prep to know

I play, I learn and I grow

Entering into society's role

Twenty through forty years my second go

Find a mate and breed into a family I flow

Work my job and build my assets

Half a life spent and half a life to go

Forty through fifty years is a pondering time

Children of age now getting off my dime

My space now reverted to two

Only leaving me to ask

What do I do?

Fifty years into sixty years still young but old

Broken worn down body the story told

One last thought of self

One last chance to act or else

The tides of change came my way

Extra money now so the old can play

A trip of a lifetime spent

Caution to the wind I went

Now my age is sixty one if not a day

Standing in an empty house no voices to say

Deep within my mind I dwell

Taking a handful of pills to feel swell

At sixty five I landed on the dot

Retirement forced upon me accepted or not

Ten to twenty years to go

What will I have left to show?

My only thought now is my legacy

When others remember me what will they see?

A time on earth spent in waste

Everything I did I did in haste

So my legacy I leave in your hands

Fold back your fingers and you will understand

Fold back the first finger equal to one

Then fold back the third and fourth finger

You will see that I won

You will see my legacy is a word of thought

Upon your hand a message I brought

You will carry my legacy through time

My lips now fall silent no longer to whine
