DEDICATION

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka once said that the best way of learning an art is to look at what others in that field have done. I seem to have done just that. Growing up, I had always wanted to be a writer but there I was bereft of ideas and skills. Also, there was no one to teach me. Mum was hell bent on me being a science student but I always had this passion buried in me and was sure that one day, I will live my passion. That started to happen when I met my beloved Editor and elder brother Mr Yusuf Olayode, the Chief Editor of ‘The Tick Times Nigeria’. Then, he was still an undergraduate although in final year while I was just a freshman at Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology. Our meeting marked the beginning of my writing career. Another instrumental personality in the buildup to this book is Shefiu Adedayo Lateef a brother, friend, colleague and as I like to call him; ‘My Uncertified Psychologist’ and he actually encouraged me to write this collection of poetry. I also acknowledge my invisible teachers and inspirations both dead and alive. The teachers: Faiz Ahmed Faiz (From whose poem titled ‘Dedication’ came the inspiration for ‘My Word For All’), Gulzar (His writings taught me various poetic expressions), Tagore (His works helped me in expressing my feelings), Guru Kabir (The one who I call ‘Old sage’ in this book), Chinua Achebe (Learnt from his works what African art should look like). The inspirations: Professor Wole Soyinka, Mr Sam Omatseye, Mr Tade Ipadeola, Mr Elnathan John, Professor Sam Ukala and all the great Nigerian writers out there (They are all my invisible inspirations).
I also can’t forget to mention some names that were really instrumental to me through the time I was writing this book; Zainab Okunade, Sumyash Samuel Sunkur and the members of Pioneer Group Of Writers.

The Paradox Of ACHIEVEMENTS

PART 1

Inspired by

Youthful Sentiments

SNARL OF MY CONVALESCENCE

Snarl of my convalescence
Momentarily impetuous
Shall I meddle with the yearnings?
Or get a disguise so I will renege on the society’s principles
That too, without worries
Oblivious of my own aspiration
Shall I make do with or relinquish for all I care?
For how will I revel in restfulness and solemnity?

But rather, my breath babbles more
asking me to gain on the passion and just wrangle
Saying; “just become more passionate”

Weaving new dreams with each passing day
While echoing are the unheard vents of dreams forsaken
Still, I wringer
Wrench or relinquish?
Pry into or jettison?
An entrapped passion seeks freedom
The door should open
For my painful knock will only grow louder
Unravel the mystery behind my words
Untangle me from the beguiling web

But no, my heart beats faster
rendering with rhythm the lines;
“Live a little more
While abiding by your dreams
The craving of times unuttered”

Stopping without a halt
A turbulent wheeze abiding the course
Perplexingly querying the scorch
Body and soul quaking for fear
A glistening wish
Glistening more

And yes, my eyes now see
The words written boldly on the face of destiny
It reads; “Only a star shines without burning
Stars twinkling without smoldering
Snarl of your convalescence”.

QUESTION OF FATE

I queried fate
Asking why I was
And a whim replied, for survival

I fragmented words and stories
And reformed them into poetry
Trying to battle destiny

All I wrote, I recite again
Anytime I stumble
And I walk again for the sake of my dreams

An arcane memory throbs and trickles
Each time I stare at the paths of fate
And I ask again, why I existed

In the lane of mystery, my memory strolls
And in the boulevard of a golden dream, it takes a nap
Again, I ask fate, why I was

A lost twinkle of reminiscence
And a traveler bird lost in the wandering clouds
The trails I follow, looking out for them

Naivety, I hope to conquer
As my aspiration is to soar high
But here I am,
getting intoxicated by smoke as it smoldered
from a place beyond the boundary of this galaxy

LIFE BEING AND SOUL

What mystery besets the being
A soul it cloaks, like a sanctuary
While asking what pain feels like
Asking was this soul
Seeking to learn about life
Having been gutted at some point, somewhere
In all ways, some time ago

There with a wish,
Relentlessly fragile, this heart beats
Covertly deprived, this soul lays
This I fear, is a retribution of life
And trust also has become infidelity

Sometimes it’s a painful sojourn
By this weary wanderer
Meandering through this daunting oasis called life
Here, where all hopes end
And here again, where a new season blossoms

OUR NEW WORLD

What difference does it make
It is all merciless and fake
Dreams my heart refuses to forsake
Spunky for the sake

Peepers thereupon blink
After the aubade flaunts vaingloriously, vetoing a double blink
Shadows forlorn thanks to losing the link
Grief shrouds this heart to sink

With canals and rivers flowing
Love would make the world perhaps come on a little recalling
With my trademark airy timidity bestowing,
me in this world and living

Halt for a moment
For this heart to get over the torment
Just before I slip away any moment
I will fill into the eyes but will not say; no comment

I will watch from afar without saying
For this is our new world.

REFUGEE

The dream of eyes adrift
Lost too in the swirls of time
Akin a falling star
Lonely as it travels, in a dark deserted night

Breaking away from the sky it was
Then some loneliness with darkness mustered
And asking with keenness
How the candle be burnt?

Silently enunciated were the grievances
Lone and unaided in the city
With hopes that the words on the lips
Those prayers, be answered

The home too was destroyed
Straying, lost somewhere
Lone and unaided in the city
Dealing now with hunger

Walking on the streets
With over a hundred pains on the body
All tired lost
And with conditions, bad enough

Dejected
All ensconces of sympathy seem dirty
All sources of humanity are also not there
A deplorable fend for survival

But so much, keep trying
And with your guts, every hurdle you will scale
In a way, you will be able to fend yourself from yourself
Before breaking away from a height above the skies

Striving, burning through the deepest of the earth
Refusing to be deluded by the gloomy ambience
All routes lead to doom except one
Look to the skies and implore;
Find your way back home

SEA OF DROPS

Silly and infatuated sundown
Gloomy and esoteric tunnels of twilights
Having to consolidate with a wish
To find a chaste civilization
A place where grins are indifferently bestowed
Outside of where the cloudy clime covers
There, to relive the essence of life
And form bonds with strangers
After those sweet talks crop up
Also, alighting the flight of life’s defiant philosophies
On a sod land, barren of worries
A place where on every lane, alleviation makes fly
And joy greets every moment

While keeping count of the beats made by the heart;
Making inquiries about tomorrow’s tale
Letting the heart beat while living the life
Embers too will explode, breaking all barriers
New songs will be sung
While the children play zestfully
And the adults, joining the chants
Flowers should blossom in the light of the day
And stars, shine in the dark of the night
So all will be seen and admired
Crazily and enviously

Sinuously hoping to flow with the wind
Alongside the desires, blown open
With the luggage on the shoulder
A philosophy to stay the course
While conversing with the heart
Telling tales of earth’s hero…

On the path they both talked
He and his heart
As they journeyed to where the path leads
Surviving the journey not on the drops of fate
But on fate’s sea of drops
