Dedication

I am an addict, a serious addict.
I am addicted to Krishna.
Everything about Krishna entices me.
I am so addicted, everything around me reminds me of Shri Krishna !
With the grace of God, Guru, Vaishnavs, friends and family, I am able to indulge in my lifelong passion for writing. I sincerely thank them for all their help, encouragement and advice.

I dedicate this book of 54 padas (poems) to my highly addictive addiction – Krishna (Krushna).

Introduction

Born and raised in Pushti Marg, I became really interested in its art and cultural hisorty after reading “Krishna as ShriNathji” by Amit Ambalal in 1988. In the book, there is a wealth of beautiful images, verbal as well as pictorial. This made me eager to learn more. After I graduated in 1989, I spent over a month at Nathadwara to learn more about Pushti Marg. Enchanting beauty and ‘other-worldliness’ of the havelis at Nathadwara had a profound effect on me, addicting me to the wonderful world of raag, bhog, and shringar of Pushti Marg.

In summer of 1992, the “Vaishnav Youth Circle UK” organised a series of lectures by HH Yogsh bawa on the Astachaap poet-saints of Pushti Marg. Their life stories from 15th and 16th Century India were so inspirational, I was keen to learn more about their poems called “pada”. In December 1992, with the grace of God, I wrote my first pada.

My parents and family encouraged and supported my budding interest in poetry at every stage. My father came up with an ideal “nome-de-plume” for the padas for me – “Bhavat”, meaning “to like / beloved”. All my padas are dedicated to “Shyam-Sundir-Var” and hence have His name is in all my poems aswell.

In November 2006, with the help of my wife Sujal, parents, parents-in-laws, Drupa and HH Pankajbawa, we published 10 padas on a CD, “Bhavat Padarvindam” (available on Amazon). Encouraged by family and friends, I decided to publish 54 out of 700 plus padas to a wider audience. Shyamu fua, professor of Hindi, helped correct my rather confused mix of Hindi-Gujarati-psudo-Vrajbhasha. Ramesh mama translated the essence of the padas in German. Cousins Claudia and Mansi translated them in Spanish. My mother wrote the poems out and corrected my ‘spellings’. Sujal sat and proof read it all. I can’t thank them enough for their help and encouragement in this project.

The project was on ice for a few years. In June 2010, I eventually published the 54 poems on my website Pushti-marg.net In May 2013, I published them on Kindle. In Autumn 2017, I published them on Smashwords.

Hope you will enjoy these padas as much as I do.

Jai Shri Krushna from the Shah, Mehta, Zapata and Dordi families!

For Your Kind Information

To make it easy for people to “read” the poems in a western script I have deliberately used phonetic spellings for the transliteration rather than the conventional spellings.

Various translations in English, Spanish and German convey the essence and emotions of the padas rather than give the literal meaning of “each and every word”. In some instances, the whole pada is distilled to a single line, as I found it impossible to convey the intensity and emotion in any other way.

Please note, I have used the word Krushna rather than the popular spelling of Krishna in this book. The way Sanskrit is pronounced, Krushna is a masculine word and Krishna is a feminine word. For publishing purpose, and for ease of search on google and Kindle, I have kept the popular spelling – Krishna on the title page. In the book itself, I have used “Krushna”.

If you wish to contact me, please feel free to write to me bhagwat_s@yahoo.com / bhagwat.shah@gmail.com

I also share my addiction of Krushna and Shrinathji with the whole world on my website - http://pushti-marg.net/index.html

Guru Vandana
Supplication to my Guru

It is traditional in Hindu culture to thank our gurus and show due respect at the beginning of any endeavour. Hence, at the start of this pada book, I offer my deepest obeisance to my gurus. It is through the grace of my various spiritual and secular gurus that I am who I am. I owe my intellectual and spiritual development to them.

Intellectuals have the option to either hoard their information or to share it. Those who are patient and generous enough to work with those less intellectual than themselves, become teachers. They share their joy of knowledge and information, creating more intellectuals in their wake. Hence, Hindus respect the generosity of such teachers by calling them Guru – the mighty ones !

Teachers of secular subjects help us to understand and explore the mundane world.
Teachers of the spiritual subjects help us realise our true potential and realise that there is something for us to achieve beyond the hum-drum of the mundane world.

Attitude of gratitude is a key aspect of any civilised society. Being grateful towards your teacher and mentors, is an essential part of Hinduism. Gurus, as givers of knowledge, are respected as pseudo parents and spiritual guides and are considered second only to God.

I offer five padas in this section at the revered feet of Shri Vallabhacharyaji.

Philosopher’s stone can turn base metal to gold. But, it cannot turn base metal into another philosopher’s stone !

Wonderful as they are, true devotees of the Lord are capable of inspiring others to become devotees themselves !

How ?

Oh mind, think about the great benefits you will have by meditating on Hari, Guru and the devotees of the Lord.

Like the life giving rays of the Sun, they are ever present, easy to perceive and so easy to get along with !

Even the gods desire to be devotees of the Lord, so mind, concentrate on Hari, Guru and the devotees of the Lord.

In the presence of the omnipotent, omnipresent Lord of the Universe, all other powers in the universe pale into insignificance.

Out of compassion, the Lord has become incarnate, helping souls to transcend the cycle of life and birth.

Shri Shukdevji and Shivji enjoy His divine sport whilst deep in meditation.

For the masses however, who have no such discipline, Shri Vallabh kindly created the “Pushti Marg” so that everyone can experience the grace of the Lord !

****

Stavan
Prayers to the Almighty

God is God.

Infinite, eternal, omnipresent, omnipotent.

Stavan is our prayer to the almighty.

In my prayers are my hopes, aspirations, beliefs, fears and future plans. But all these are insignificant and rather myopic in your magnificent presence.

When words fail me. When even imagination comes up against its limits. When I have nothing else to offer, not even praise, for it sounds so hollow in vastness that is YOU, I simply fold my hands and bow my head to you.

There are nine hymns in praise for the ultimate, supreme, universal spirit as Krushna.

Giridhara kalpa-druma hamaro

mangale karata, prana piyaro.

Sochata siddha karata sukha saro,

Kalpatrau, the heavenly wish-granting tree, only grants your wishes when you are under its boughs.

Our Giridhar-Gopal is such a wonderful person, He grants the wishes of his devotees wherever they happen to be !

The compassionate, omnipotent Lord, grants more than is asked of Him ! Mere sight of Him is enough to make our lives wonderful, just imagine how wonderful would it be to meet Him in person !

****
