I Talk, You Never Listen

Copyright 12-25-2018

Steve Lake

I stepped upon the verbal stones so carefully

As not to slip

I cross the river of conversation with you

Reaching the other side to only get wet

So now I dig a pit

To bury my useless words

Not wanting their souls to roam endlessly

May they rest in peace

It's truly a better place they sleep

So I return to my thoughts

As not to waste careful words brought

Below your ashes lies an ember

My words could burn like kindling

To flare up into a flame of misunderstanding

So now I choose words of love not hate

Words of kinship and friendship

This time sailing across the river of conversation

A déjà vu as I drip dry

You purposely sunk my ship

Really! I just ask why?

Now I have to really question

Maybe my words without actions are confusing to you

So now I combine actions with my words

By shouting across the river of conversation

As my wrinkled skin dries

Us both standing on opposite sides

At my feet there are two stones

One is round and the other is flat

A true symbol of us

I am the flat stone skimming across the water of conversation

You are the round stone sinking below into the depth of darkness

Life's water of conversation is running over you

Why, I don’t know

It's what you do

So I leave the river of conversation

My new path is set through the woods

Embracing all the creatures with talk

Just confirming I could

Oh now you want to listen you baulk

I no longer want to talk

I return to pay my respect at the grave of my useless words

My freedom from you gives them worth

In vain they did not die

Yet I shed a tear for what they vied

A hopeless attempt at a try
